Pretty true - fact of the matter though is that the majority of people will go and be duped by some salesperson that knows jack squat about computers, rather than take the time to research something and the effort to learn about something that is "new" to them and most likely rather intimidating as well. The illusion (false though it may be) of security provided by the "name brand company" is not to be underestimated. Most ppl say "at least if it breaks I can take it back", but what they don't realize is that building it yourself generally provides you with far longer manufacturer warranties than the standard 1 yr that you get from a Dell or HP etc.....

I think that's the whole point of the article as well though, it is emphasised throughout how it is a non-scary process, only looks it to a beginner.

But there's lots of guides for beginners...I guess they prefer to just buy the computer when it's built.

Might help if a "beginner" tries on a crappy old pc that nobody cares about. Back when I was much younger I played around with the same crappy old junk PC's and learned everything I know now from myself then. People are amazed when you are the only one in the family who knows how to "build/fix" a computer but It's not a hard process at all, but you can't tell them that they just don't believe you. Dunno though, hope to make good money someday with that skill if no one else will learn.

i'd say building your own pc gives you greater security because you know everything inside it. if you can put it together, then you can fix/troubleshoot it.

A lot of parts wholesalers will actually build the computer for you, for a small fee. My local parts wholesaler, that are INCREDIBLY CHEAP will put the system together for you for a 60AUD fee if you buy all the parts through them. Perhaps if building a PC seems like a daunting task simply do the research, order the parts, and ask the company you're buying from if they have an assembly service.
